Inspired by the sun, sand, sights and sounds of the coast at Tynemouth, these playful textured drawings imagine characters, particularly swimmers, in the natural environment. The work seeks to explore the contrasting elements of water with its dual qualities of weightlessness and resistance.
Bethan Laker is a freelance illustrator and drawing is at the cornerstone of her work. She uses accessible materials such as cardboard to upscale work, exaggerating nuances and celebrating the line. She typically works with bold line, collage and pattern to produce charming, witty and colourful responses to everyday life. Bethan Laker lives in Newcastle with her husband and two daughters, all of who feature in her drawings. She works to commission, runs workshops and organises Big Draw events.
